Alcan appoints Gove contractor
Sydney 16 October 2003 04:18
Alcan has appointed Australia’s Leighton Contractors Ltd. and
Canada’s SNC-Lavalin Group as its engineering, procurement and
construction management (EPCM) partner for its proposed expansion of
the Gove alumina refinery in northern Australia.
Leighton and SNC-Lavalina will operate through their unincorporated
joint venture LSL and will initially be responsible for the definitive
feasibility study at the Northern Territory refinery.
Alcan plans to complete all the detailed feasibility work by mid 2004
to allow for a 2007 commissioning of the expansion.
To cost the Montreal-based aluminium producer an expected US$900
million, the expansion is intended to take the Gove refinery’s
capacity to 3.5 million tpy of smelter grade alumina from 2 million
tpy currently.
"The appointment of a world-class EPCM partner is a substantial step
towards achieving successful completion of the detailed feasibility
study for the proposed expansion project," said Michael Hanley,
President of Alcan‘s bauxite, alumina and specialty chemicals business
group. He added that the Gove expansion is a key component of Alcan’s
strategy to double economic value every five years.
In December 2000 Alcan bought 30 percent of the Gove refinery and
related bauxite mine from Gove Aluminium Ltd. for US$393 million. The
acquisition gave Alcan 100 percent of Gove.
